For Jutta

How long the time, that I`ve been wand`ring
--- sleep-walking through dark lands --- I cannot say.

So much like the blind man who`s not missing
the knowledge of colors on his life`s way.

But then came you, and you brought a morning
whose weak, timid sun did yet end the night
with opening flowers and falling dewdrops
awaking me softly and giving me sight.

This peaceful dawn holds a promise for me
so great that it shakes me with fear, because
I cannot know how tomorrow will be.

But then, am I living only to worry?
To have seen you once is better than blindness
and to love you no thing to be sorry.
